What To Do If Aggressive Dogs Confront You

If there comes a time when you or your family is confronted by an aggressive dog, remember the following steps.

1.  Stand perfectly still.  Do not run.
2.  Do not look at the dog.
3.  If you can! slowly turn away from the dog.
4.  Once the dog considers you are not a threat any more the dog will become bored with you and go and lie down. This may take a few minutes.
5.  Once the dog is settled very slowly move away from the dog, if the dog moves towards you again, stand still and DO NOT LOOK AT THE DOG DIRECTLY
6.  Keep doing this until you are safely away, from the dog.
7.  Then report the dog to the proper authorities or talk to the owner of the dog.

Do not challenge the dog this will make things worse.

If a dog bites stay perfectly still, try and remain standing and move against a wall or corner. Turn side on so if the dog bites it only bites repairable parts.  I realise that this sounds bad but it is better for a dog to bite your arm or leg rather than your face or throat.
It is very difficult to stand there and do nothing, but if you look first before you attempt to travel around into a yard, many attacks can be prevented.

When you see a dog in the street that may be tied up to a pole outside of a shop. It is wise to let the dog to sniff the back of your hand first before you attempt to pat the dog.

People who walk straight up to the dog and pat the dog cause a lot of dog bites.
You need to always walk up slow, don’t be nervous and be confident or better still let the dog walk up to you.
Do not look directly at the dog, especially when you crouch down and smile at the dog.
This can be a threat to an insecure dog and may retaliate with a snap, bite or growl.
Common sense is best; if you have a friendly dog it does not that mean all dogs will be the same.
